Abstract

The study investigated the factors influencing the academic performance of elementary school students in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Using a quantitative approach that combined descriptive and explanatory research designs, the researchers distributed 381 questionnaires, of which 370 were returned and analyzed using SPSS version 26. The findings identified key factors—such as school safety, parental income, socio-economic status, teacher performance, and school facilities—as having the paramount impact on students' academic achievement. The study also found that parent-teacher relationships, school commute distance, child preferences, and school fees play a substantial role in academic performance of primary school students of the studied area. Overall, parental involvement, school quality, and safety were determined to be critical factors for student success. In contrast, factors like the child’s educational level, school curriculum, and social environment were found to have a weaker effect on students’ academic outcomes.
